Digital Artworks by Keith Haring to Enter Christie’s NFT Auction
Christie’s Auction House is set to make a splash in the art world with the auction of five digital artworks by the late Keith Haring. Haring, known for his iconic pop art and social justice work in the 1980s, continues to be celebrated for his contributions to the art world. The digital masterpieces are expected to fetch a significant sum, with each piece estimated to sell for $220,000 to $500,000.
The online NFT auction, titled ‘Keith Haring: Pixel Pioneer’, will showcase Haring’s talents through works created in 1987 on a Commodore Amiga computer that was gifted to him by Timothy Leary. Previously only accessible on floppy disks, these digital images will soon be available on the Ethereum blockchain, adding to their allure and collectibility.
This auction marks an exciting international tour of Haring’s classic artworks, showcasing the intersection between traditional and modern-day art. In addition to the online auction, Haring’s works will be exhibited at Korea’s ‘The Gateway’ event from September 7-8 and at Christie’s in New York from September 14-19. This collaboration has been made possible through a partnership with the worldwide licensing agency Artestar and collaborative tech specialist Digital Practice.
Haring was known for his philosophy that “art is for everybody”, and his bold, repetitive figure images and dedication to making art accessible for everyone exemplified this belief. In his heyday, Haring’s artworks could often be seen in public spaces, such as the New York subway, where he used chalk to capture the attention of passersby. Haring’s unique approach challenged the norms of traditional art consumption, and it is believed that if he were alive today, he would advocate for the medium behind crypto art.
The increasing intersection of traditional and digital art has become a prominent trend in the art world. Institutions like LACMA have recently ventured into the world of NFTs, further blurring the boundaries between the two domains. With Haring’s rich artistic history and universal appeal, the upcoming Christie’s auctions and exhibitions are expected to attract a diverse range of collectors, from traditional art enthusiasts to Web3 fanatics.
The auction of Keith Haring’s digital artworks at Christie’s is a testament to the ever-evolving world of art and its growing embrace of digital technology. As the art market continues to explore the potential of NFTs and blockchain technology, it is evident that artists like Haring, who pushed boundaries and challenged conventions, continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
