The world of virtual, augmented, mixed, and extended reality (VR/AR/MR/XR) has been facing numerous setbacks over the last few years. However, device makers remain persistent in realizing the future dream of the Metaverse. Apple’s venture into MR hardware, for instance, has been challenging but remains a key focus of the Cupertino-based firm as it aims to release the product this year.
To gain insights into the industry, XR Today recently interviewed Emma Ritterstad, the Chief Executive and Co-Founder of Warpin Reality, a Stockholm-based company that develops metaverse experiences for major global brands such as IKEA, Disney, H&M, and the Swedish Postal Service.
Ritterstad argues that the buildup of the Metaverse as the next generation of the internet requires a multitude of different technologies. Although the XR industry has witnessed layoffs and product delays, Ritterstad believes that humanity is learning to use technology to solve some of the problems it’s facing, not just to incorporate “bright and shiny” new things.
Regarding Apple’s MR headset, Ritterstad believes that the company will release an initially limited number of experiences and functionalities, with the focus being on functionality and a stripped-down version of the headset. She also highlights that software interoperability will become a valuable asset for Apple, given the massive size of its developer community.
Ritterstad advocates for more people to explore different XR technologies and understand their potential to change and shape our future. While technical concerns are significant, she notes that philosophical questions about the Metaverse and Web 3.0 are also essential to consider.
In conclusion, despite the ongoing turmoil in the XR markets, XR technologies have the potential to solve real problems and transform our future. It remains to be seen whether Apple’s MR headset will prove successful and drive the industry forward. Still, XR device makers continue to work toward realizing the full potential of XR Technologies in building the Metaverse.
